Art & Media Course

Students in the Information Design Department's Art & Media Course at Tama Art University utilize a variety of media to produce a broad spectrum of artwork in the fields of interaction, performance art, and audio-visual art. Students create interactive installations, audio-visual performances, software art, bio art, digital animation, and future cinema, among others. In recent years, we have witnessed vast and dynamic changes in the relationship between humans and technology. Through the production of post-Information Age artwork that synthesize materiality and information in new ways, the Art & Media Course has emerged as a leader in the field of 21st Century Media Art Production and Research.

At present, the course is divided into four labs, each possessing its own distinct area of research. Each lab offers a unique and synergistic creative environment where students are able to create artwork both collaboratively and independently.

Below is a link to the archive of recent work in each lab:

Message to prospective examinees:

The theme for visual expression for the 2009 examination is "infinity," defined as being a free and endless world without borders or restrictions.

The world of art is different than science and engineering in that, instead of its criterion for value being intrinsically linked to the outside forces of objective data and the whims of the market, it always resides solely within the mind of the artist her/himself. We believe that the most essential thing that an artist must possess is the ability forge ahead and create original, non-derivative works of art. Beginning with the pristine tabula rasa as a point of departure, to interact openly with the world and build original forms of expression and value is truly the principle of life. Let's take off together to a universe of infinite creativity!
